I am dying to read this series!!!! I think it will fight right into my werewolf obsession!
Per the author’s website about book one:
“Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she’ll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters’ laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything – including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?”
Rift (prequel to Nightshade; release date: August 7, 2012)
“The full moon is their mistress. They are predators of pleasure and pain. Feared by humans, envied by werewolves, the Dire Wolves are immortal shifters, obeying no laws but their own bestial natures. Once they were many, but now only six remain, a dangerous wolfpack forever on the hunt…
Rifter leads the pack, embracing the lifestyle and ethics of an outlaw biker even as he battles an ancient enemy who has become a new, powerful force. But with his Brother Wolf raging inside him, howling to be unleashed, he needs to satisfy his hungers. And when he meets a drop-dead gorgeous blonde drinking alone in a bar that caters to both human and inhuman, Rifter’s primal instinct is to claim her.
Gwen has her own desires, long unfulfilled. She hopes a passionate night with the leather-clad, Harley-riding biker will ease her suffering. The seizures that have wracked her body her entire life are incurable—and they’re killing her.
But none of that will matter if Rifter can’t stop the growing threat to them all — trappers who are determined to enslave humankind and use the Dire wolves as part of their nefarious plan.”
My Thoughts:
This book took me a few days to read, there was something about it that kept me from becoming completely immersed, but I’m not sure what it was. I liked it, but as much as I love werewolves and shifters (my guilty pleasures), these ones just didn’t grab me and hold me and make me fall in love with them. I will normally devour a book like this, but I think in this one, the take on werewolves was a little different that what I normally read.
Usually in a book like this, the human and the wolf are one; their thoughts and actions are the same and they use the same thought patterns. In this book, however, the human and the wolf were separate in their thoughts and actions. The human was constantly communicating with the “Brother Wolf” and trying to keep from shifting to let it run free and create havoc. It was like they were two people in one and I’m not sure that I really liked that. In fact, it might be my only complaint about the book. The story was good, creative and new, I just couldn’t get past the whole separate man/wolf thing.
The story itself was really good. The legend of how the Dire wolves were created and why they do what they now do was interesting. I liked how it tied in to what was currently happening in the story, everything just connected really well. I loved how every single character in this book played an important part and was somehow connected to everyone else. There was love and betrayal, demons and witches, ghosts and vampires, and even dream-walking. I mean, this book had everything but it was never overwhelming…it was perfect.
Actually, the more I think about it, the more this book reminds me of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward (must read). With the elite group within a group who’s purpose is to protect humans and “civilians”. In fact, there were quite a few similarities between the two. The main similarity was the elite group of fighters. In this book you had the Dire wolves, who were immortal and strong and had special gifts to aid them in their protection (sound familiar?). They all lived together in a house, a king that doesn’t want to be king and his wolves, that was “spelled” to not be seen by anyone who’s not supposed to. And then of course, there was the evil, the people who wanted to see the Dire’s dead or use them to advance their research. The bad guys had a pretty big end game plan, but the book left me with quite a cliffhanger, so naturally I have to read the next book when it is released in, I think, November. There are many more similarities between this book and the BDB, if you’ve read them, you will definitely see what I’m talking about!
Oh, and I can’t forget the love story between Gwen and Rifter. Gwen was a doctor with a tragic past who suffered a life of seizures and was about a month away from dying. She met Rifter, the king, in a biker bar and it was immediate attraction. Gwen was having seizures for a reason…maybe she wasn’t has human as she thought? I liked how the story unfolded with her and Rifter.
So, while I wouldn’t rate this as the best werewolf book I’ve ever read, I still liked it and enjoyed it. I will be reading the next book as soon as it comes out for sale because I have this funny feeling that each book will center on a different Dire brother and his mate. How can I resist that goodness?!
I had an awesome book buying weekend!!! I’m so excited and can’t wait to dive into them!!!!
